Traditionally, the two nations that make up the Scandinavian Peninsula—Sweden and Norway—as well as Denmark are considered to be the entirety of Scandinavia, or Scandia, a region of northern Europe. Certain sources contend that Finland should be included due to its geographic and economic characteristics, whereas Iceland and the Faroe Islands should be included because their people speak North Germanic (or Scandinavian) languages, which are linked to those spoken in Norway and Sweden. The group is commonly referred to as the “Nordic countries” when these other regions are included with Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
In addition, the term “Norden” is now used to refer to the Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—which have similarities with one another but are also separate from the rest of continental Europe. Their sparsely inhabited northern areas, comparatively abundant fish stocks, lengthy life spans, and high literacy rates are some of their defining traits.
